The kind of frightening thing is young(ish) actresses with Erdos numbers. It's pretty well known that Danica McKellar has an Erdos number of 4, _base_d on her work on the Chayes-McKellar-Winn theorem, but Natalie Portman (cognitive studies papers under her birth name, Hershlag) and Mayim Bialek (sociology paper) both have Erdos numbers of 5. You neglect to mention that being actresses, they have a Bacon number as well as an Erdos number: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erdos_Bacon_number According to the table, there are some people with a lower Erdos-Bacon number than Paul Erdos himself.  Oh, and we musn't forget this: http://xkcd.com/599/ (As always, read the mouseover text for the final punchline.) It depends a lot on how stringent you are with the connections (as Mike Schilling points out, if co-authoring birthday cards with his brother counts...).  The original definition for Erdos numbers restricted it to mathematicians, but that has been reasonably softened to published scientific papers of any kind (Erdos collaborated by providing the math on a large number of papers in physics, chemistry and other fields).  The original definition of Bacon number was restricted to appearing in a released film in a credited role. Daniel Kleitman (the lowest listed Bacon-Erdos on the Wikipedia table) is a professor of physics at Harvard.  He was an advisor on Good Will Hunting , and walked past a window in one scene.  He doesn't have an acting credit for the movie, so in strict definition, it doesn't count (he co-authored a paper with Erdos, so his Erdos number is 1).  The bulk of mathematicians who have Bacon numbers, got them by appearing in small roles in A Beautiful Mind The three actresses I mentioned are notable not because  of their Bacon numbers (all three are '2's) but because of the scientific papers. McKellar meets the strictest definition for Erdos numbers, having co-authored an original mathematical theorem, Bialik's connection comes through original research she did for her doctoral thesis on Prader-Willis syndrome, which was then used in a published study, Portman gets bonus points for having her first published paper while still in high school.
