Fatima's Prophecies At the third apparition the children experienced a deep fear, but this seems to have been fear of the vision that was shown to the children rather than fear of the personage that was showing the vision.. They said that they were shown a frightening vision of hell, an understandable source of fear given the archetypical entities shown in the vision. As Lucia described it, Mary ...opened her hands. The light reflecting from them seemed to penetrate into the earth, and we saw as if into a sea of fire, and immersed in that fire were devils and souls with human form, as if they were transparent black or bronze embers floating in the fire and swayed by the flames that issued from them along with clouds of smoke, falling upon every side just like the falling of sparks in great fires, without weight or equilibrium, amidst wailing and cries of pain and despair that horrified and shook us with terror. We could tell the devils by their horrible and numerous figures of baleful and unknown animals, but transparent as the black coals in a fire. Understandably frightened and deathly pale, the children raised their eyes to the Virgin Mary and cried out for help. She responded: You have seen Hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them God wants to establish throughout the world the devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If people will do what I will tell you, many souls will be saved, and there will be peace. The war is going to end.But if they do not stop offending God, another and worse war will break out in the reign of Pius XI. When you see a night illuminated by an unknown light, know that it is the great sign that God gives you, that He is going to punish the world for its crimes by means of war, hunger, persecution of the Church and of the Holy Father. To forestall this, I shall come to ask the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays. If they heed my requests, Russia will be converted and there will be peace. If not, she shall spread her errors throughout the world, promoting wars and persecutions of the Church; the good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated; in the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, which will be converted, and some time of peace will be given to the world. In Portugal the dogma of the faith will be kept always. It is fair to say that this vision would not have been credible except for one fact — history has shown that to be one of the most prophetic of all messages given in our day. It is especially so when considered as a message given early in the 20th century, when Russia was a backwards country of little military importance in world affairs. Concerning the night illuminated by an unknown light, this is alleged to have come to pass on January 25, 1938. This was the night of an extraordinary Aurora Borealis which illuminated all of Europe and parts of North America. So unusual and breathtaking was this auroral display, that many reports were received by fire departments from people who thought that forests were on fire. The display was reported on the front page of the New York Times and other newspapers throughout the world. It is reported that Lucia, by then a nun in seclusion, made it known to her bishop that this was the sign prophesied by Mary. True to the prophesy, a worst war than World War I began shortly afterwards when Germany declared war on Poland on September 1, 1939, precipitating World War II. This was the same year that Cardinal Achille Ratti, elected Pope Pius XI in 1922, died and thus ended his reign. In spite of the Fatima prophecies and miracles, the consecration of Russia was not performed. Consequently, World War II was followed by the Soviet empire, that spread her errors throughout the world, promoting wars and persecutions of the Church. Millions were martyred, and various nations were annihilated by being absorbed into the Soviet Empire. As far as the Holy Father will have much to suffer, this culminated in the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square on May 13, 1981
